Welcome to the Devlin Gallery

My work is a two-tiered process of first gathering and then combining into a cohesive image a wide array of found objects and other found materials. These processes necessitate both physical and mental wandering.

Gathering materials has taken me all over the country and has found me in abandoned buildings, dumps, junkyards, thrift stores, on roadsides, and in other peoples' trash. This view of remoteness and the underside of life has shaped my vision of the world, as well as my art.

Putting these disparate materials together is nearly pure improvisation. Only some of the time do I have a clear image that I'd like to render. Most of the time a random "starting" piece is manipulated, further distressed, added to, and built upon as a direction and, ultimately, an image makes itself known. Working titles come to mind quickly and begin to influence the direction and form an image takes as it is worked and reworked and influenced by 40 years of looking, wandering, and scavenging.
